Without Web Traffic You Will Not Make Any Money Online
There is a very simple rule that applies to any money making venture that you undertake online and that is NO TRAFFIC = NO MONEY. You might say that this is obvious but I have lost count of the number of people that have complained to me about their sites not making any money, and then when I investigate this for them I find that they are receiving about 3 to 5 visitors a week! This is not the way it works. You must get more traffic than this.
Earning money online really comes down to driving lots of visitors to you site and compelling them to take action. I know I made that sound simple but it is the same as in any offline business. If you own a shop then your aim is to get as many people into it as possible and then convert them into buyers by using persuasive tactics such as advertising and sales patter. There are so many people that believe “if you build it they will come” and it never works like that. Yes there are more and more Internet users going online every day but reaching them is not that easy. In this post we will look at the most common ways of generating web traffic.
Getting Free Web Traffic
There are a number of ways that you can get free web traffic but each of them has a cost in terms of your time. If you have a limited budget then this is the way to go to start with and then when you have made some money you can re-invest some of it into buying web traffic. I have some web sites that get thousands of unique visitors every month all from free traffic methods. The methods are free to do (you can outsource them as well if you prefer that) but most of them will take time to see results.
1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Getting free visitors from search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing is great because if you do it right they will be targeted web traffic that is interested in what you have to offer. The first step with SEO is to undertake keyword research so that you can identify the search phrases (or keywords) that people are using to find the information that they require. For example if you are an affiliate for a product about losing weight quickly and easily then the sort of keyword terms that you would need to target are “lose weight”, “how to lose weight” and “fat burning”. Now each keyword will have its own volume of traffic each month and also a degree of difficulty to rank on the first page of Google. I am an SEO expert and I will provide a comprehensive tutorial on keyword analysis in the membership area shortly.
When you have you chosen keywords you need to then create quality pages on your web site that provide information about that keyword. The pages need to be optimized properly so that Google and the other search engines know exactly what it is about. Then you need to obtain some quality links from other web sites and watch your pages climb the rankings.
Now I made all of that sound easy but it is not in practice. SEO is a skill that takes a lot of time to acquire. It is much more complicated now than it ever was before as Google has introduced many changes to its search algorithm which means that getting Google web traffic is much harder than it used to be. There will be much more information about SEO in the member’s area.
2. Social Media Traffic
You can build up quite a following on Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus if you provide high quality content that can go viral and attract many people. You can use Facebook groups to spread the word about your new product or service and if you do this right then you will make many new friends and get many likes to your Facebook pages. This is a good way of getting traffic but again it takes time. It is best to use an incentive here that people will be interested in so that they have to “like” your page before they get access to the incentive.
3. Article Writing
This is where you write an informative article related to what you are selling and publish it on some of the big article sites such as ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com and buzzle.com. Article writing is still a good way to increase web site traffic but it is not as effective as it used to be. You need to write a lot of articles these days to get the best results. Having said that, I am still receiving commissions today for articles that I wrote three years ago so it does work.
You Can Buy Web Traffic
If you have funds available then you can purchase traffic which is targeted to your offer. The advantage of doing this is that you do not have to wait a long time to see the results. There are many ways that you can get paid traffic and here are a few of them:
Pay Per Click
Google, Yahoo and Bing (and others) all offer pay per click (PPC) options where you can place ads with them that will appear on the first page of the search results for particular keywords. You only pay when somebody clicks your ad and visits your web site. With PPC you can start generating traffic in as little as 15 minutes. Google has made a lot of changes to their PPC offerings (Google Adwords). You can no longer take a visitor straight to an affiliate page and they will examine the landing page that you are promoting to ensure that it meets their strict guidelines. If the offer you are promoting has a high payout then PPC can work but it can be very expensive if you don’t control it.
There are many websites that will place your advertising banner on their site for a fee. This can be very effective and I have had some very good results from this in the past. You can usually negotiate a fixed monthly fee or pay on a cost per impression basis which means that for every thousand times your ad is presented you will pay a small amount. The trick with this is to find a site that has a lot of traffic which is totally related to your offer.
What happens here is you approach a list owner who has a lot of subscribers to run an advertisement to their members. This can be very effective but you have to be careful and make sure that the list owner is honest and will guarantee a certain number of clicks for your money.
This is just the tip of the iceberg for generating traffic to your web site. I will be providing a lot more information on this very important subject in the near future.
